Brian Fish has stockpiled a roster with an array of skills during his first two recruiting classes. Montana State’s third-year osabdhead coach found athleticism and explosiveness in Zach Green in his first class. His second class netted a leDnthal scorer in Tyler Hall, a tough perimeter defender and tone-setting leader in Quinton Everett and one of the funkiest matchups in the league with 6-foot-10 3-point shooting Sarp Gobeloglu.
In his third recruiting class, Fish knew he needed to find a hard-nosed point guard to replace Marcus Colbert and a versatile forward to replace Danny Robison. He hopes skilled Norway product Harald Frey can develop into a fluid, skilled point guard over time. Fish thinks Utah Valley transfer Konner Frey can be a more athletic and diverse version of Robison right away.
The one thing Fish has not had in his first two seasons at the helm is a true shot blocking center. Eric Norman, a 6-foot-9 stretch forward, notched 50 of Montana State’s 91 blocks two seasons ago, using timing and crafty angles much more than prodigious jumping ability to protect the rim. Last season, that number fell to 62 blocked shots. No Bobcat blocked more than the 6-foot-3 Everett. The guard had 14 blocks as MSU ranked dead last in the 12-team Big Sky with just two blocks per game.
