SAN LUIS OBISPO, California — Cal Poly head football coach Tim Walsh has announced the addition of two junior college transfers and a high school senior to the Mustangs’ 2016 recruiting class.
Defensive lineman Leroy Mealancon Jr. from College of the Canyons and middle linebacker/long snapper Mason Montgomery of Butte College will enroll at Cal Poly in the fall after signing scholarship offers. Defensive lineman and pass rush specialist Cedric Muzik of Redondo Union High School has been admitted to Cal Poly and will join the football team as a walk-on.
The trio join 17 high school seniors and one community college transfer who signed the National Letter of Intent or Grant-in-Aid offers Feb. 3.
Montgomery recorded 112 tackles, including two sacks and seven tackles for loss as a sophomore during the 2015 season at Butte. He also notched two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception en route to first-team All-NorCal Conference National Division honors.
Montgomery produced double-digit tackles in six of his team’s 11 games, including a career-high 17 against City College of San Francisco.
The 6-1, 235-pound Montgomery also made 70 tackles as a freshman in 2014 along with one sack, one interception and two fumble recoveries. Thirty-three of his tackles were in the final three games of the season, including 13 against American River College.
Butte was 6-5 last fall and 7-4 in 2014.
Montgomery also received offers from Bryant and Division II schools Sioux Falls and Concord.
At Ashland (Oregon) High School, Montgomery was a center and linebacker, earning the Grizzlies’ 2013 Dave Kitchell Most Inspirational Award. An all-state linebacker as a senior, he was named Midwestern League Defensive Player of the Year in both 2012 and 2013.
Montgomery also excelled in wrestling at Ashland, earning the Oregon Class 5A state championship at 220 pounds as a senior, one year after claiming runner-up honors at 195 pounds. Montgomery was 29-0 as a senior.
Mealancon, 6-5 and 270 pounds, recorded 15 tackles in 10 games as a sophomore in 2015 and 28 tackles in nine game as a freshman in 2014 at College of the Canyons. His career includes 10 tackles for lost yardage, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries.
Also recruited by Hawai’i, Fresno State and Alabama, Mealancon is a 2013 graduate of Paraclete High School.
As a junior in 2011, Mealancon made 49 tackles, including six sacks and 7.0 tackles for lost yardage, to go along with three quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery, helping the Spirits to an 11-3 record, second-place Alpha League finish and 2011 CIF-Southern Section East Valley Division runner-up placing.
Mealancon did not play football as a senior as he exceeded the California Interscholastic Federation’s age limit.
Muzik, 6-2 and 240 pounds, made 81 total tackles, including 33 for lost yardage and 17 sacks, as a senior at Redondo Union last fall, leading the Sea Hawks to a 10-3 record, second-place finish in the Bay League and a spot in the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs.
Postseason honors for Muzik include MaxPreps 2015 California Medium Schools All-State Football Team, All-CIF-Southern Section Western Division Team and Torrance Daily Breeze All-Area Team. He also was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the Bay League.
Muzik, who also played on the junior varsity basketball team as a freshman, made 10 sacks as a sophomore en route to Cal-Hi Sports All-State Sophomore First Team honors and earned All-Bay League and Daily Breeze All-Area honors as a junior, returning one interception for a touchdown.
