The Montana State and Montana indoor track and field teams opened up the indoor season with the Montana State Open on Saturday. Five Bobcats posted qualifying marks in six events for next month’s Big Sky Conference indoor championships in Bozeman. Three Grizzlies also punched their tickets in the first meet of the season, an open meet that also featured athletes from Montana State-Billings, Rocky Mountain College and Carroll College.

“This was a great start to the season,” head coach Dale Kennedy said. “Overall the team competed really well. We’re a little rusty, but this team is working hard to improve each week. We need to step it up to a higher level next week, competing against more Big Sky schools. There were some great individual performances tonight, which is nice to see this early in the season.”
Sophomore sprinter Mitchell Hornig punched his ticket in two different events. He ran 6.95 seconds in the 60 meters to win the event. He ran 22.26 seconds in the 200 to place second and qualify. Montana’s Dominique Bob ran 22.13 to win the 200.
Montana State sophomore Kyle Douglass, a Missoula Sentinel product, led all competitors in the shot put, throwing a personal-best 55 feet, 4.25 inches, almost three feet past the BSC qualifying mark. Zach Sharp and Calvin Root went one-two in the weight throw with throws of 55-11.00 and 53-09.75, each finishing just short of the qualifying mark of 57-05 feet.
Montana’s Hana Feilzer won the women’s weight throw with an impressive qualifying throw of 55-07. Samantha Hodgson won the women’s shot with a throw of 45-05.75, half a foot short of the auto qualifying mark.
Alexander Lewis and Kevin Close won the horizontal jumps and the pair qualified for the conference meet. Lewis’ long jump was 22-09 and Close converted a triple jump of 46-01.25. MSU’s Danielle Rider placed third in the long jump (18-00.25), while Leah Cook also found a third place finish in the triple (36-07.75).
Montana’s Matt Quist and Maddie Taylor helped the Griz sweep the high jump. Quist’s jump of 6-foot-9 qualified him for the championships. Taylor’s jump of 5-05 was two inches short.
MSU pole vaulter Austin Decker
In the pole vault, Montana State’s Austin Decker walked away with the individual victory, vaulting 15-03 but was six inches short of the AQ. For the Bobcat women, senior Casey Teska had a great start to the season, qualifying for the championships with a vault of 12-09.50.
Other Montana State winners included Daryan Box in the women’s 60 and Stephan Delaney in the men’s 60-meter hurdles. Each barely missed auto-qualifying marks. Jenette Northey took home the 5,000 meters while the MSU men’s distance medley relay team and 4×400 relay team won their respective events. Eric Zechenelly, and Samuel Bloom ran on each. Chris Lange and Jadin Casey joined them on the 4×400 and Martin Ponce and Andrew Vandine were also on the winning DMR team.
Montana’s Erika McLeod took home the 200 and Emily Cheroske took home the 800. Morgan Sulser captured the 60 hurdles, missing the qualifying mark by 0.18 seconds. Sterling Reneau won the men’s 400.
Former Montana State standout Cristian Soratos ran in the 800 meters before embarking on a three-race tour of the East Coast as he pursues his professional dreams. Soratos won the 800 by more than 10 seconds over Montana’s Jonathan Eastwood, a Belgrade native. Soratos’ time was still three seconds short of the school record he ran last season.
