Montana’s Gfeller earns Big Sky weekly award

on

University of Montana junior Brandon Gfeller has been named the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week after leading the Grizzlies to a 2-0 start in conference play.

Gfeller, a native of Colfax, Washington, led the Grizzlies to two road wins in the opening weekend of Big Sky Conference action. He averaged 22.5 points on 57 percent shooting last weekend. The guard had a stellar performance from 3-point territory, shooting 58 percent from deep.

In Thursday’s 90-84 overtime win at Northern Arizona, Gfeller was the leading scorer with 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. All eight of the junior’s field goals were from beyond the arc with only one two-point field goal attempt on the night. He was just one 3-pointer shy of setting the new school record for most treys in a game by an individual. The Grizzlies did set a new team record for most 3-pointers in a game as a team with 18. The previous record was 16 treys, set against Portland State in 2002.

Gfeller continued his hot shooting streak at Southern Utah on Saturday where he posted 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. In the 83-66 win at SUU, Gfeller went 6-of-11 from behind the arc.

The Grizzlies return to action Thursday with a home game against Portland State. They also welcome Sacramento State to Missoula on Saturday. Both games will tip at 7 p.m.

Others nominated: Chad Sherwood – Idaho; Joel Bolomboy – Weber State; Isaiah Pineiro – Portland State; Venky Jois – Eastern Washington; Eric Stuteville – Sacramento State; Jordan Wilson – Northern Colorado; Kris Yanku – Northern Arizona; Tyler Hall – Montana State; Quinton Hooker – North Dakota; Ali Faruq-Bey – Idaho State; James McGee – Southern Utah
