Joe McElroy has a lot on his plate, both in the focused sense of the amount the growing teenager eats and in the broad sense of an incredibly busy schedule.
The four-sport athlete —not only is McElroy a Class B all-state talent in football and a starter in basketball at Loyola but he’s also a dual-sport spring athlete who participates in track and tennis — has learned footwork, competitiveness, time management and dedication during his three years at Missoula’s private Catholic high school.
Despite growing up in Missoula, McElroy has also been a fan of the Montana State Bobcats his entire life. The first weekend in April, McElroy was one of dozens of junior prep prospects who attended Montana State’s “junior day” showcase. That Saturday, McElroy toured the MSU campus, learned about the prerequisites for nursing school and earned himself a scholarship to play offensive line for the Bobcat football team.
Less than two weeks later, the Missoula native became MSU head coach Jeff Choate’s first verbal commitment for the Class of 2018. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder is slated to play offensive line for the Bobcats.
