True freshman QB Murray leads Bobcats into hostile environment for first time

on

Chris Murray has seemed like a peerless athlete at times and a clumsy freshman quarterback others during an up and down debut season for the Montana State Bobcats. On Saturday, Murray will experience a test like none he’s seen in his four games since taking over as Montana State’s starter under center.

The 18-year-old from Inglewood, California has played substantial snaps during Montana State’s Big Sky Conference road games at Sacramento State, Weber State and Southern Utah. He rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns but also had a hand in a fumble inside the 10-yard line in MSU’s 41-38 loss at Sac State. He started his first game at Weber’s Stewart Stadium, fumbling an option pitch on the second possession of the game and throwing two other interceptions in a 45-27 loss. The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown but also threw three crucial interceptions in the 38-21 loss at Southern Utah.

A total of 22,249 people attended those three home games combined. On Saturday, Murray will lead Montana State into the 116th showdown with bitter rival Montana in Missoula. The announced attendance at Washington-Grizzly Stadium will almost certainly surpass 26,000 with tens of thousands of other Montanans around the entire state watching intently as MSU tries to knock Montana out of the playoffs for the first time since 2012.
