THE TRANSFER

Cameron Skattebo, RB (Sacramento State > Arizona State)

Skattebo, a bowling-ball running back from Rio Linda, just outside Sacramento, careened onto the scene in 2021 after the 2020 season, his first year on campus, was cancelled and the Hornets opted completely out of the spring 2021 campaign. That year, he racked up all of three touches in the first six games of the season – before going for 117 yards on 10 carries in the seventh against Northern Arizona. That assembly-line efficiency became his hallmark – not a lot of touches, a whole lot of devastating impact. He finished that 2021 season with 644 yards on 69 total touches – an average of 9.33 yards per – and came back even better in 2022, providing the Big Sky’s social media managers with a never-ending flow of viral clips as he spun, hurdled and powered his way through tacklers on a weekly basis.

The end result? 1,373 rushing yards on 196 carries (7.01 yards per), 11 total touchdowns (including an onside kick taken back to the house in the season opener), a well-deserved Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year award and plenty of interest when he hit the transfer portal when Sac State head coach Troy Taylor left for Stanford. He ended up not with Taylor but with two other former Big Sky head coaches at ASU, where he appears to be in line for a heavy dose of carries with the Sun Devils.
