It may or may not be a legend told to freshmen during their first Cat-Griz Week, but Samori Toure, freshman who is redshirting this fall from Oregon, is planning on spending part of his week up on Mt. Sentinel protecting the white ‘M’ from Montana State fans with vandalism on the mind.
“We gotta go up and protect the ‘M’ so Montana State doesn’t come up there and mess it up,” said Toure, five days from his first experience with the rivalry.
Toure won’t be in uniform Saturday when 22nd-ranked Montana and Montana State meet at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. If he remains where he has been all season, Toure will be in the front row of the student section with the remainder of the Grizzlies’ redshirts watching their team compete for what’s left of slim playoff hopes.
But regardless of what happens Saturday, it’s not going to be where Toure will remain for long. Next season he and a good contingent of his classmates will be counted on to compete for starting spots, or at least provide depth during year three of Bob Stitt’s quest to return Montana to the FCS elite. With that, he’ll be part of a team expected to extend the program’s recent dominance of the bitter rivalry.
